Women’s Voices Changing the Middle East

The evening before International Women’s Day, March 7th, some of the most prominent women’s rights advocates in the Middle Eastern region visited Oslo and the Nobel Peace Center.

They shared their personal stories of activism, perseverance and resilience and discussed how women’s voices can change the Middle East.

Zaina Erhaim: Syrian journalist and director who trained hundreds of citizen journalists to expose the human cost of the war in Syria.

Yasmin El Nadheri: Yemeni regional development expert and the secretary general of Peace Track, working on global development at a local level.

Azadeh Pourzand: Iranian human rights expert and daughter of the celebrated Iranian women’s rights leader, Mehrangiz Kar, Azadeh will be sharing her personal story for the first time on a public stage.

The event was a cooperation between the Oslo Women’s Rights Initiative, the Nobel Peace Center and Civita. It was sponsored by Stiftelsen Fritt Ord.

About the Oslo Women’s Rights Initiative:

A network of activists and experts founded on the idea that collaboration is key to supporting universal gender equality. The Initiative seeks to connect prominent women’s rights activists around the world with Norwegian civil society leaders. Following the talks at the Nobel Center, participating activists will convene for two days of workshops where they can explore partnerships and collaborative projects to elevate their work, expand their resources and broaden their opportunities.
