TURKEY:
Democratic erosion and the rise of global authoritarianism
Illiberal populism is rising worldwide, eroding democracy and threatening stability. Turkey has been a particularly poignant case, as it drifts towards an ever more authoritarian state, by curtailing civil liberties and freedom of speech. What are the causes behind the surge of illiberal populism? Will Turkey continue its path towards authoritarianism, or is there a way to revive a real democratic process? How should we understand Erdogan’s ideology, and what role does Islamism play?
The panel: Thor Halvorssen, President and CEO of the Human Rights Foundation and founder of the Oslo Freedom Forum, Iyad El-Baghdadi, human rights activist and fellow at Civita, Fatma Betül Sarayli, author and Anne Christine Kroepelien, lawyer and chairman of the Vigdis Freedom Foundation.
